It froze and I lost almost all of my aloes.

Borrego's Aloe Blog

This past winter, I toyed with the idea of replanting my one aloe bed. Part of the reason for doing so is after a couple of years, aloes have grown. In some cases, quite well.

If aloe brevifolia grows well, it offsets. When aloe bainesii and marlothii are planted near each other and they grow well, it gets crowded quickly. Such is the case with my aloe bed.

I also have the desire to get a few different aloes in the ground. I have removed a couple large aloe veras, which has freed up some room.

Also, when the bed was first planted, I did not necessarily till or turn over the soil. On one end of the bed, where the tree aloes are planted, I did work some pumice in, but on the other, the soil was not enhanced at all. The decomposed granite top dressing will be tilled right into the soil and a new top dressing will be added when the project is completed.

With spring finally here, next weekend is when it all happens. I’ll get started on it late Wednesday afternoon and have ther rest of the week to complete it.

ALOE VERA FREE! {shipping/handling charges apply} The healing properties of Aloe Vera have been known, and are recorded, since biblical times. For centuries aloe has been used by native Americans as medicine. The gel of the aloe plant is used for a variety of ailments: minor cuts and insect stings; rashes such as poison ivy, and other itchy skin problems; and the mucilaginous gel is soothing to burns and sunburns. A living aloe vera is a must for your kitchen window. To use aloe medicinally, as a healing agent or as a pain relieving ointment, remove a section of a lower leaf that is 2 years or older. Squeeze the juice onto the affected area and leave uncovered. Reapply as necessary. Live aloe plants come in handy! Remember: these healing benefits can be applied to pets as well!

If you have never heard of the first-aid plant, ask a few of your neighbors.

You should soon find some who can tell you their experiences.

They may call it the "Burn Plant," but the official name is

Aloe Vera.

Happy Summer.

Despite the heat and humidity here in Georgia I am so glad when summer arrives. Watching the plants and animals off my back deck in the cool of the evening is nice. We haven't seen any dear yet. I think it freaked them out when we moved the garden. Every year we grow two rows of corn, have been for 20 years. If we get 3 or 4 ears we
are lucky. They eat it as fast as it comes in. We put in 3 rows of tomatoes, a lot even for us!
It has been a very dry year so far for most of us. My veggies don't like it but the aloes don't seem to mind at all. We got some peppers and some cucumber plants and that is going to be it. i should be eating my aloe vera. Apparently  a lot of you out there have learned that it is only for external use. One thing I do know: When you cut leaf it has a strong, not too pleasant odor. But it is claimed that aloe vera juice or concoctions made from whole leaf aloe. BTW young aloe plants have only very small amounts of their 'miracle cure' ingredients. It has to be 3 years old and concentrate the trace elements  in sufficient quantity.

That Little Penny In The Parking Lot

That Little Penny In The Parking Lot
Remember this every time you pass that little penny in the parking lot.
I always thought that it was for good luck, but I love this version better.
I found a penny today
laying on the ground.
But it's not just a penny,
this little coin I've found.
Found pennies come from heaven,
that's what my Grandpa told me.
He said Angels toss them down.
Oh, how I loved that story.
He said when an Angel misses you,
they toss a penny down;
Sometimes just to cheer you up,
to make a smile out of your frown.
So, don't pass by that penny
when you're feeling blue.
It may be a penny from heaven
that an Angel's tossed to you.
So now pass this on to people you care about
and who you feel are Angels to you.
I just did.
An Angel is now watching over you.

melissa gersey's aloe plants

OK! well, here is the other aloe plant pics I promised.
There is a few both together, and one of the other plant, I had sent a few of one of them, but the single pic is of the other in this email. If you look close at it, you will notice the one has I think you may call it a bruise on it, maybe the cold weather we had been having before. I dont remember hitting the plant or scarring it in any way. Dunno, but it looks to be recovering. It looks like it was squeezed on the leaf of that aloe in the pic, I know you have waited patiently for these pics of the aloe plants I got from you.
Just to tell you a little about them...

I will send you some of the other aloes and both together also, when I get a reply from you, ok? I had originally bought 4 of them, but gave 2 of em away as a present, so I cant give you pics of the 2 I gave as presents.
talk soon,
hugs
Melissa

Thanks Melissa,
I wish you a happy summer and don't forget the sap is good on sunburns(:-)
great pics and nice of you to share the aloes with others.

I have a HUGE Aloe Plant that is so top heavy it is going to break off.
I hate to waste all the huge leaves that are going to break off and II
cannot lift the pot so I need to start over with a smaller plant
anyway. But I want to use the aloe in the leaves and there is too much
to use in a month. I want to know how to keep is for future use.
Should I just scrap the gel off the leaves and freeze it or can I add
something to it to make it keep in the refrigerator for a year or two?

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl, Thanks for visiting and for this glowing description of an enthusiastic aloe grower. I'd love to see a photo.
Processing the aloe for home use has its limits.Differing methods are used by competing producers. Freezing the gel is a worthy idea. In fact I would very much like to know the result. The very lowermost leaves are the best suited for thier concentration of emolients over time.
The parent plant can be root pruned and repotted. It may reroot from the trunk.

a reason, a season or a lifetime

Pay attention to what you read. After you
have finished reading it, you will know the reason it was sent to you. Here
goes:

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you
know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person. When
someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have
expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide
you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or
spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for
the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part
or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring
the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away.
Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.

What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled,
their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is
time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come
to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you
laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give
you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real. But only for a
season .

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build
upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept
the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all
other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind
but friendship is clairvoyant.

Thank you for being a part of my life, whether you were a reason, a season
or a lifetime.

Send this to every friend that you have on-line.

Aloe Planting Instructions

Planting instructions

Aloes have a shallow, spreading root system, so when it is time to plant, propagate, or repot choose a wide planter, rather than a deep one. Use a planter with a drainage hole, or provide a 1-2 inch layer of gravel in the bottom of the pot to ensure adequate drainage. I find terra-cotta pots are perfect for aloe because they don't retain the extra moisture that could damage the plant, but, if you are careful not to over water any planter will do. When you pot your aloe offshoots, or the main plant, use regular potting soil with  an extra perlite, granite grit, or coarse sand added. You may also use a packaged 'cacti mix' soil. I have had success with a composted ‘cow manure’ product. Dampen the soil before potting. The plant won’t require more water for a couple of weeks. Then pierce the soil with a fork, breaking up the hard surface, down to about two inches. This allows the soil to better absorb the water. Water lightly. It takes about 45 days for a newly potted pup to take root.

Fertilize yearly, in the spring with a dilute (half strength). Aloes are propagated by removing the offsets which are produced around the base of mature plants, when they are a couple inches tall (or larger). I usually let them get 4 to 6 inches.
Mature aloe plants love bright sun, but will do well in medium light as well. Young plants should not get direct sunlight. Allow the soil to dry between watering and water less in the winter than in the warm months. They like being pot bound in my experience, and may be divided each spring or before if you have a lot of baby plants in the pot.
The aloe is a succulent plant, with leaves that can hold water for long periods at a time. Too much water can rot the plant and it would take the most severe drought to dry it out.
The plants only other enemy is cold. It will do quite well next to a window with even minimal light, but it prefers bright, indirect lighting.
An aloe plant is a welcome friend in the kitchen. When you need to use it medicinally, just remove a lower leaf from the plant, slice it open, and apply the gel on the affected area.
Potting aloe is a great children's project by the way. The plants are easy to handle, and hardy enough for little hands to replant.

Aloes for projects. Flowering aloes

Growing aloes is a great project for classrooms, Sunday schools, and scouts. The children will have fun watching them grow. The plants are easy to care for and can tolerate rough handling. The healing qualities make them perfect for teaching kids the value of gardening.
Aloe plants are unusual and distinctive as decor for weddings, receptions, and parties.
I have an aloe plant that has rewarded me with blooms this year! See below:

Comments

Just wanted to tell you about my experience with the aloe plant many years ago. Back in 1970. I burned my thumb very badly with steam and immediately wrapped a split aloe leave all around it. wouldn't you know, there was absolutely NO SCAR !  Amazing! A big blister had already formed too. Since then, I always keep aloe. Lots of people don't know of it's abilities, but believe me, it works! Keep up the good work getting the word out. Pat
My little Aloe pups are waving, but a little frantic.  One of cats
decided to chew on the baby one.   ;-(     I hope he survives, but need to
move him to a safer location.  I don't think Aloe will hurt Aslan, but
Aslan may be deadly to Aloe pup.  Ha, ha!!!   I need to buy some more
Wheat Grass or Cat Nip Grass for them to chew on. Linda
Hi Randall-I am sorry for not writing sooner.I received my aloe the  other day, thank you soooo much.A couple of the leaves broke off but it is still wonderful.Thank you for mailing it to me and for making these wonderful plants available to everyone!!Thanks again,Leah Clay
I just ordered an 8 to 10 inch plant.  Well, I sent s&h charges, anyway.  Thanks for a chance to grow one of these on my own!  I went to the internet hoping to find a place to buy, and I was blown away by your generous offer.I have had cellulitis, and due to some medical errors, I actually almost died in September due to septic shock.  I have some pretty rough skin and scarring on my legs, but I have noticed that products with aloe in them have been helping keep them smoother and more moisturized.  I thank you for your generosity, and hope that the actual plant will be more effective than the additives in creams.
Thanks!! Lori Jewell

Spring Has Sprung

It’s time to get outside! I have a couple of new pictures of the aloe plants I have been growing. Aloes are a dignified species. Despite the most callous treatment they will quietly sit in their space and thrive.  My aloe plant has been steadily producing to the tune of 30 offshoots a year while achieving gargantuan proportions. The biggest of its pups are producing almost that many, and the third generation is beginning to produce some.

Since launching the freealoeguy, I have provided a growing number of aloe plants all over the country.

So get in tune with nature. The gel from the leaf actually has first aid qualities. If you are subject to paper cuts or other minor injuries you can break of a leaf tip and treat the wound. While giving anti-bacterial aid it dries and forms a barrier against infection. An aloe plant will do well inside under fluorescent lighting but it benefits from a little sunlight, but not too much.

By the way, if you are in the east of Atlanta area you can pick up your free aloe plant. Or, for a small fee, to cover shipping/handling, I’ll send it anywhere in the continental US. Ranging in size you can get the perfect aloe plant for your kitchen window, desk, etc. Now I am sending a large, potted plant with leaves 12 inches and larger.

GO THERE NOW

But I mostly send out smaller plants around 6 to 10 inches.
